Meet Our Staff
ProTec Inspection Services is one of the largest and oldest family owned and operated home inspection companies in the country. Our family and staff know that if we take care of you and your needs, the needs of our company will take care of themselves. Since our inception in 1986, we’ve performed more than 27,000 paid inspections! Let our family take care of yours.
Rob is the president of ProTec and has been doing both residential and commercial inspections for 30 years. He is a certified building inspector specializing in commercial inspections and estate homes. A member of ASHI and InterNACHI, Rob also is a certified mold inspector, a wood-destroying insect inspector, pool inspector and an accredited Level 1 certified residential thermographer. Rob is licensed and certified to perform all sorts of building evaluations throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.
An international business coach to home inspectors throughout North America and a mentor to building inspectors throughout the country, Rob regularly speaks to groups of home inspectors, Realtors, and contractors, to help them learn how to properly market and run their business. In 2010, Rob and his wife, Michelle, won the national “Better Your Best” award for business improvement and marketing among building inspectors in the U.S. and Canada.
Today, Rob oversees one of the largest home inspection companies in North America, inspecting more than 2.6 Billion Dollars’ worth of real estate annually. Rob’s top priority for ProTec is taking care of the customer. We believe by taking care of our customers, their lives will improve — elevating our business and personal lives as well.
When Rob is not in the office, he can often be found on the Four Streams golf course in Beallsville, where he is unsuccessfully trying to relive his youth as an accomplished tournament player. In addition to golf, Rob is an avid Redskins and Nationals fan. These days, his real devotion is watching his kids play their sports. Cheering is less painful than playing.
Now our vice president and general manager, Michelle came to the company kicking and screaming. A high school math teacher by trade, she was a full-time mother of five when she was pressed into service as a sub eight years ago. She’s been here ever since. Her master’s degree in mathematics and experience keeping tabs on kids has given Michelle the ability to juggle many tasks at once. She is the heart and soul of the company. As it turns out, she is a marketing wiz. Since bringing her on board, our business has increased 1000 percent. Thanks in large part to Michelle, we are now one of the largest private home inspection companies in the country.
Michelle speaks to Realtor groups and home inspectors on a regular basis on the subjects of inspections, marketing, and business development. Homemade food and a quality speaker really bring in the agents to office staff meetings! If you would like to have Michelle speak at your office, give us a call at (301) 972-8531. Call well in advance, as she is often booked up for months at a time.
Michelle is a certified commercial inspector, National Radon Safety Board-qualified radon manager, and certified mold inspector. Rob jokes that he brought her in to work for him, but now it appears that he works for her.
When Michelle is not on the job, she is coaching her daughter in soccer and basketball or attending her son’s football or lacrosse games. As if that is not enough, in her remaining free time she likes to do yoga and hike in the woods with our two dogs. The woman never sits still; it’s quite annoying.
Jeff is our nephew and the Director of the Services Division for ProTec. As such, he oversees all inspection-related operations from hiring and training new inspectors, to guiding his team of seasoned inspectors to be the best in the business.
A graduate of the IEB school of business and inspection management, he has been with ProTec for many years now, performing more than 5,000 fee-paid inspections on everything from small condos to large commercial buildings. In addition to being a licensed MD and VA home inspector, he also holds certifications for both ASHI and InterNACHI, mold sampling, residential infrared scanning, and termite inspections. He is NRSB licensed to perform radon testing as well. His attention to detail and ability to relate to customers make him one of the best in the business. He brings a level of enthusiasm and energy to the inspection business that is second to none.
If you really want to see Jeff light up, ask him about his new baby girl and beautiful bride.
Chris, a MD and VA licensed home inspector has been with ProTec for many years. He has worked in the building and inspection industries and is frequently requested by Realtors and past clients. He has been a home inspector for a decade, performing thousands of building inspections both in this area and in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Chris also has a background as a remodeling contractor specializing in flipping homes and worked for years as a licensed roofer. He is certified to do mold sampling, termite inspections, residential infrared thermography, and is certified through the NRSB for radon testing.
Attracting high-quality inspectors like Chris is a benefit of being one of the largest home inspection companies in the country. He currently works for some of the biggest and most successful agents in the area, and we are thrilled to have him.
Side note: He played linebacker for the University of Pittsburgh, so he can offer protection if your home is in a bad neighborhood. But don’t buy him lunch or you could go broke. He is reported to be an excellent chef, so talk him into cooking for you instead.
We are always looking to hire new inspectors. If you think you have what it takes, send your resume to ClientCare@ProTec-Inspections.com.
Scott has been a Maryland and Virginia licensed home inspector with us for several years and is a very bright young man. Before becoming an inspector, he worked as Rob’s assistant. He has performed over 2,000 home inspections and is one of our most requested inspectors. Clients and agents alike are amazed at his extensive knowledge and experience. Quick witted and kind hearted, Scott has the detailed mindset of an engineer and the ability to relate to people like a counselor. In addition to being certified by both ASHI and InterNACHI, he is certified in mold sampling, residential infrared scanning, and termite inspections. He also is an NRSB certified radon technician.
Scott also is our nephew — and Jeff’s brother. He is also from the Cleveland area, so be gentle with him during the football season as he is likely to be depressed every Sunday in the fall.
Rob believes you can’t go wrong if you hire people who are smarter than you. For many years we hired older guys who knew a great deal about construction, but weren’t as good dealing with customers, writing reports, or operating a computer. We discovered they often failed to climb to the other end of the attic or take the time to triple check the basement. Ultimately, they could not do the job to our standards. We now prefer to hire young smart inspectors who are personable, can learn quickly, and are capable of writing and operating a computer. As a result of our hiring practices and extensive training program, we now have one of the best inspection teams in the country. Scott is at the top of the heap — he always goes the extra mile for his customers.
Phil is one of our most detail-oriented inspectors and has been a Maryland and Virginia licensed home inspector with ProTec for several years. If you check us out on Yelp, you will find that Phil has the most reviews of any inspector in the area. His attention to detail fits perfectly in this industry. Clients and Realtors alike appreciate his ability to write inspection reports in a clear, concise manner.
A graduate of Kent State University with a degree in psychology. Phil also hails from Cleveland, like so many of our inspectors. His experience renovating homes with his family growing up and working as a pest control operator have allowed him to transition quickly and successfully into the home inspection industry.
When we hire inspectors, we look for quick learners who can communicate well and want to help people. Phil has all that and more, and he is booked solid most days. He is a certified by ASHI and InterNACHI and has earned several credentials since becoming a licensed home inspector, including: mold sampling, termite inspections, residential infrared thermography, and he is certified through the NRSB for radon testing. It seems that Phil shows up every other week with another certificate for some sort of class he has taken. Because of his thirst for knowledge, he has become one of our top training inspectors in only a few years
Brad is Rob and Michelle’s eldest son. Everyone has special skills, often going through their entire life not realizing what that special skill is. A good athlete, a good student, a good writer.
Fast forward a few years and we have figured out he is a great home inspector too. When first training, the professor called him “Rain Man” because he already knew the answers to the professor’s questions from listening to his dad over the years at the dinner table. Today Brad has more certifications and credentials than anyone in the company: MD and VA Licensed Home Inspector, ASHI and InterNACHI Certified Home Inspector, NRSB Certified Radon Measurement Technician, TestAll Certified Mold Inspector, State Licensed for Termite Inspections, Certified Residential Thermographer, Sprinkler Inspector, and Sewer-cam Technician.
Brad was a volunteer firefighter which gives him the real-world knowledge with regard to problems that can happen as a result of poor construction practices.
We have found that by hiring people that love what they do and live to serve others, our customers are thrilled and our business thrives.
Matt began working with us as a real estate agent. A short time later he began dating Michelle’s niece (they are now married with their first child on the way). I guess we wore him down with all the home inspector talk around the dinner table as he soon decided to join our inspector team. His former training as a Realtor has given him the insight to know what to say and when to say it. He has a bachelor’s degree in English from Towson University, which allows him to express himself in writing better than most of us.
In addition to being a MD and VA licensed home inspector, Matt performs Commercial Building Inspections. After working alongside our Commercial Director, Rob Hopkin, and attending training programs by CDW Engineering, Matt can conduct Commercial Property Condition Assessments (PCAs) in accordance with ASTM Standard E2018. He also holds certifications for both ASHI and InterNACHI, mold sampling, residential infrared scanning, and termite inspections. Like the rest of our inspector team, he is an NRSB certified Radon Measurement Technician so he is able to perform radon testing that meets the licensing requirements set in real estate contracts.
When he is not working — which is rare — Matt enjoys watching football and basketball and is a big Capitals fan. There is a rumor that he plays a mean guitar, but we have not been able to get him to play for us yet.
Matt is one of those guys who just gets it. He does what we ask of him and gets it right the first time, thanks to his unmatched attention to detail. We believe that family is the most important thing in our lives and by hiring others with the same values, we will all benefit. Family always goes the extra mile. Had we known that years ago, we would have had five more kids.
Born and raised in the DC Metro Area, Joe came to ProTec with over 25 years of experience in the new home building and home renovation industry and has taught us all a thing or two. His extensive experience and attention to detail make him a key player on the ProTec Team.
He is a MD licensed home inspector, TestAll Certified Mold Inspector, NRSB Certified Radon Technician, Termite Inspector, and an ASHI and InterNACHI member. Joe’s a jack of all trades determined to master anything that comes his way.
This Navy Veteran is a proud father of two and grandfather to six. Most school holidays, he goes on camping and fishing adventures with his family. We’ve also heard every once in a while he can be found playing in a band.
I know these bios are supposed to reflect our employee’s work qualities, but what do I say about a guy that can beat everyone in the office at golf? He must be a cheater. Just kidding, he is a real good golfer that you always want on your team. Bruce also is into music, having attended over 300 concerts. He is a husband and father living in Point of Rocks, MD.
As for his inspection credentials, has several years of remodeling experience and is a licensed inspector in both MD and VA, is a certified member of ASHI and InterNACHI, is a licensed termite inspector, mold certified sampler, qualified pool inspector and NRSB radon certified tester.
Richard lives in VA and went to Old Dominion University. After working in the pest control industry for several years, he decided the home inspection field was a natural fit and we agree. Richard has performed several hundred inspections since joining the home inspection profession and has done a great job on our team. His qualifications include: Licensed Termite inspector, certified InterNACHI home inspector, ASHI candidate, NRSB radon certified and a certified mold sampler.
With 4 small children, all girls—and finally a boy on the way–Richard is up for any challenge. He enjoys the beach and is a devoted father. Along with playing dress up, he lets his kids paint his hands and feet so try not to give him too hard a time about the manicure.
Frank is making a name for himself as one of our most enthusiastic inspectors. It’s a great feeling to know that you’ve hired an inspector who is thrilled to be in this profession. Before joining the ProTec Team, Frank gained extensive experience while working for other home inspection companies. Now that he’s learned the ProTec way of inspecting, it’s clear we were lucky to scoop up such an experienced, knowledgeable, and caring inspector. Frank is a MD and VA Licensed home inspector and a member of ASHI and Internachi. He is certified to do mold sampling, termite inspections, infrared scans, and is a NRSB certified radon technician.
When he’s not writing inspection reports, Frank enjoys spending as much time as possible with his beautiful 3-year-old daughter. After that, any free time is spent playing baseball or basketball, and of course, learning new things about home inspections. Our inspectors know that there is always something more to learn in this industry and will put in that extra effort to keep their knowledgebase current.
Tony is a retired fire captain who will blow you away with his dynamic personality and thirst for learning new things. He has two children and more hobbies than the Prince of Monaco. He is into boating, car racing, car restoration, remodeling houses, and working as a home inspector. Tony was a little bored last year, so he has also become a certified HVAC contractor in his spare time. We are excited to have him on our team and are always looking for additional challenges for him to tackle.
Tony is a MD-Licensed home inspector as well as a member of ASHI and InterNACHI. He is qualified to do mold sampling, termite inspections, infrared scans, and is a NRSB certified radon technician.
We are so lucky to have Andy as one of our inspectors! His friendly demeanor and comprehensive inspection knowledge is precisely the kind of skill set we are looking for at ProTec.
He was born in the Dominican Republic and came to the United States at the age of two. Andy loves all kinds of food and has a passion for boating. I think we may have the only inspector in the metro area that also performs, sings, and directs in his Community Theater. In fact, that’s where he met his wife. They are the proud parents of two great and successful grown children. The goal for all of us!
Andy is a MD Licensed home inspector as well as a member of ASHI and InterNACHI. He is qualified to do mold sampling, termite inspections, infrared scans, and is a NRSB certified radon technician.
Erik is a jack-of-all-trades. He has been trained to do every aspect of ProTec’s services at the highest level. As a licensed inspector in Maryland and Virginia, Erik is our top requested Spanish-speaking inspector and has the ability to communicate the findings of an inspection in a both informative and non-threatening manner. He has that unique ability to connect with everyone he meets. He came to us about a few years ago in search of a career, rather than a job. If someone wants to work at ProTec they have to believe in our core values:
1. Having a service heart
2. Family is the most important thing. If we can do some things to get you back to yours more quickly, all of us will be happier.
3. Everyone deserves a good home and we will help make it possible
Erik’s core values match ours exactly; he is exactly what we are looking for in a great inspector. We have found that if we only hire smart, career-oriented people, everyone has a great experience.
When Erik is not working, he spends time with his fiancé and his two dogs. He likes to cook, make people laugh, and play sports (I am told by some that he should probably stick to cooking and making people laugh).
Licensed in both Maryland and Virginia, Rob came to us with the kind of background a home inspection company dreams about. With 10 years of high level construction experience, we managed to pull him away from being the superintendent of one of the premier new home builders in the area. Rob knows new homes, especially high-end new homes better than any 10-year inspector. He lives in a 100+ year old fixer upper home in Frederick so Rob is intimately familiar with the quirks of older homes as well.
In his spare time, he likes to work on his own home, hunt, and fish. One of his hobbies is wood working which requires the patience of a monk and the detail of a surgeon. Rob is one of the most personable guys you will ever meet with a smile on his face from morning till his head hits the pillow.
At ProTec we like to hire young inspectors with potential and mold them into great inspectors. Rob was a rare find in that he came to us with some great skills and yet was humble enough to learn the business the ProTec way.
Lexy, another transplant from Cleveland, is our director of happiness/marketing manager. We hired her when she moved here to be closer to our nephew Scott. She is family to us, and we believe that family is the most important thing in this world.
Turns out, she is really good at a lot of stuff. Lexy is very well organized and has great and original ideas for marketing every week. Who wouldn’t hire someone that grabs the bull by the horns and just makes it happen? We think there is a good chance Lexy will be running the entire company at some point.
She travels all over the metro area to keep in touch with our clients and real estate agents, spreading goodwill and cookies like Johnny Appleseed spread seeds. When she is not out singing ProTec’s praises, she can be found in the office answering calls and scheduling inspections.
In her spare time, Lexy enjoys yoga, cooking adventurous recipes, and playing with her dog Bella. Her boyfriend Scott is skinny now, but he is doomed if she keeps cooking all that good stuff.
Connie is our Office Manager and is an indispensable member of our team. She is a perfectionist and never gives up on a project until it is perfect. For clients, that means we will be at the right place, at the right time, with all the names spelled correctly. For us, it means fewer headaches and more happy clients.
She went to Penn State University and studied business abroad in France. Don’t mess with her, as she is a certified U.S. Army sharpshooter and former wrist wrestler. If you want to mess with her a little, though, her nickname is Bleach.
She lives here in Poolesville with her four kids and enjoys playing trivia and traveling. Connie is so dedicated that she has been known to come in to work even when she’s not on the schedule. Can you tell we love our staff?
Heather is the proud mother of three wonderful children. Don’t tell them that though, as they are high school age and would certainly be offended by the prospect of being called children. No kid understands that our kids will always be our kids. In fact, we often hire her children for special projects here in the ProTec office, from babysitting our youngest or dog sitting to stuffing bags and blowing up balloons.
Heather has been with us for many years and is the one everyone in the office turns to when they need an answer. She is our lead scheduler, head of customer relations, and one of our original marketing reps. She can be found most Tuesdays at a broker’s open house somewhere or delivering our famous cookies to real estate offices all over town. With Heather, there are few phone calls that don’t get answered live — even late at night. She usually has the business phones forwarded to her cell and even though we tell her not too, she has been known to answer at 10 p.m. We get calls from inspectors all over the country asking how they can get someone to answer the phones and schedule as well as Heather can. They say, “How can we get a Heather?”
One of the key aspects of running a successful business is marketing. We have hit the jackpot with Valaree. She is the kind of person that seems to have a spotlight on her when she walks in the room. If she is at the event you will know it. Her infectious smile and quick wit is a huge asset to our company. Valaree’s favorite thing in life is putting a smile on someone’s face.
She is married to a Montgomery County Police Officer (34 years) and the mother of 4 grown children. In her free time she acts as a volunteer commissioner for the town of Poolesville and runs a dynamic DJ business. I remember watching her DJ once several years ago and telling my wife we should hire her. It took a few years, but now she is a shining star in our marketing department.
BTW, if you need to hire a DJ she still does it and is awesome.
Julie is our Commercial Division Coordinator. Her duties include taking care of commercial inspections from start to finish. In between calls, she can be found with the rest of our team helping run day-to-day operations and assisting managers with any projects they throw her way. Her hair is falling out from changing hats so much.
She completed a degree in accounting from the University of Richmond. Julie is the most organized and possibly the smartest person in the company, so if there is something you need, she is the one to talk to. She will soon have done every task in the business short of an actual building inspection. We are pleased to have her on board and wish we could hire another five like her. Our rule in the office is that if Julie is handling a task, we might as well consider it done.
Ann is a longtime friend of ours who mentioned to Michelle that she would like to go back to work now that her kids are in school. What a find! She has a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Pittsburgh and is a master at multi-tasking. She is one of our top customer service reps, having previously worked in a similar role in the health care industry. She walked in the door ready to work.
Ann has three children, and like most of our staff, lives in Poolesville. One of the perks of working for a family owned company in town is the ability to run up to the school to decorate for a party and still get in a full day at the office.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Ann is an avid Steelers and Penguins fan, but we let that slide since she rarely wears her jerseys to work. Ask her about visiting the Whitehouse and meeting the President with the Penguins.
I asked her for a bio and at the bottom she wrote a line that says it all: “I enjoy my job and can’t wait to take your call.”
Doris worked hard for IBM for 30 years and is now an important player on the ProTec Client Care Team. We hired her because she has such a service heart. If you read our core beliefs, you will see the first and most important one is having a service heart. We want employees that have a burning desire to help others. Doris is the kind of employee that will go the extra mile for our clients and realtors. Spend an hour with her and you’ll see there is no one who enjoys their job more than Doris. It’s great to have that kind of energy around a bustling office.
Doris’ favorite night of the week is Trivia Tuesdays. She is also an avid scuba diver and bowler!
Alison is one of our most dedicated client coordinators. She is a diehard Caps fan, loves to cook, bike, and garden. The perfect day off for her would be to pick something from her garden, cook it up and bike it over to Ovechkin or one of the other Caps.
Before coming to ProTec, Alison ran an animal clinic and doubles as the resident vet for the five dogs that regularly run around in the office.
Brittany is one of our newest client coordinators. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she is doing a great job for us! The job of client coordinator at ProTec sometimes requires the arms of an octopus, the listening skills of Dr. Phil, the attention to detail of Rain Man, and the communication skills of Oprah: Brittany encompasses all of these! She enjoys spending time with her 5 year old son, hiking, and is a fantastic baker in her spare time. If she continues to bring her cakes into the office we will have to add a gym in the basement. Her cakes are spectacular. Just thinking about her baking, I must go get a cookie….
Rashida is a graduate of VCU and lives in Germantown with her dog Hazel. She loves cooking and sports and is the youngest of three kids that grew up in Alexandria, VA. She is a big believer in living outside your comfort zone, which is a huge plus at ProTec because we are always pushing the envelope on what is possible.
When looking to hire a new employee, one of ProTec’s key questions is “Why?” We know if an employee has a strong personal “Why” that is in alignment with our company’s, we both will thrive. Rashida is all about helping people and that is exactly what we look for.
The next thing we look for is someone that is a “Who”. We found out a couple of years back that by focusing on the “Who”, the “What” and the “How” will take care of themselves. Rashida is our favorite kind of “Who” to hire—smart and ambitious. We point her at a project and she knocks it out of the park–often in ways we never thought of.
Rashida is taking over our Commercial Department, running point on our Affiliates Program, and involved in every special project that requires thinking out of the box.
I know what you’re thinking. She’s under contract and you can’t have her.
Theresa is our Radon Department Manager. She is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the hundreds of radon tests done by our company each month. In Ohio, she worked in the radiology department of a hospital as an X-Ray Tech. Now she deals with Radon all day. Like a moth to a light, she has a natural attraction to radioactive isotopes.
Her hobbies are playing cards, making jelly, and spending time with her new grandbabies. She has an unnatural love of coffee which is costing the company a fortune. I think we are in part responsible for the increase in GDP of Columbia since hiring Theresa.
Theresa has recently relocated to our area from Cleveland. I guess there was no reason to stay once LeBron left. But really, she is the mother of 3 of our top employees and she’s Michelle’s sister. That makes 13 family members that are now employed by ProTec. We are truly a family business.
Michael is Rob and Michelle’s youngest son. He majors in Sports Management at James Madison University when he is not working for ProTec as a radon tech. One of the things we stress to our kids is obtaining specific knowledge. That specific knowledge that few others have enable him be in demand and earn more. Michael listened to that advice, took courses and a test to become a NRSB certified radon tech. He now earns more part time as a radon tech than anyone else he knows.
Encourage your kids to gain specific knowledge. It will serve them well later in life. We feel it is important to teach kids about work early and give them a good sense of the entrepreneurial spirit. The days of graduating from college and working for the same company for an entire carrier are over.
Katie is our youngest daughter and currently in middle school. She is the one that keeps Michelle from crying every day now that Michael is off to college. Katie’s main job is giving Michelle a reason to go home at a decent hour. She is an avid athlete and tallest girl in her class playing soccer, basketball and swimming on the swim team.
Katie is the dog manager and considers herself the office iPhone specialist. It’s hard to argue since I go to her every time I need to figure something out on my phone. She’s all grown up now, but how can we take down this picture of her inspecting at age 4?!
This is our radon detecting dog Abby and her gang. Just kidding—there is no such thing – but she and the rest of her gang think they work for the company and her job is to let us know when the UPS truck stops in front of the office. Daisy, Bella, Piper and Bullet are Abby’s trusted assistants, who you might hear racing through the office for no apparent reason.
The office is just a better place with a few dogs running around. A core belief of ProTec is that family is the most important thing in our lives and the dogs are part of our family.
